I hope you’re sitting down for this one. Seriously, you have to read this in it’s entirety.
It’s a recently revealed exchange between a once avid Star Citizen backer and a customer service rep.
At some point, Sandi Gardiner, (that would be Chris’s wife, head of marketing and such) chimed in.
It’s 100% authentic (or I wouldn’t repost it. Lawsuits aren’t fun) and it’s yet another eye-opener into the train wreck of an on-going scam that this once promising project has now become.
Whatever you, be sure not to miss the “corporate espionage” part. Just in case, here is a direct link to that one. It’s patently hilarious.
And in case you missed it, they stopped giving out refunds, citing that the disastrous 2.0 build, represents a substantial release of the game. This despite the fact that last we checked, it doesn’t even represent 10% of what was promised back in 2012.
Here is a recent exchange by a backer trying to get a refund.
Back in Nov, one of the last remaining bona fide investors (not a regular backer) in the project, bailed.
This is what the current standard “fuck you, no refund” email looks like. Here is a version with context.
Seriously, this is how things are now.
January 5, 2016 at 1:54 pm #2161They don’t have the foundation built because building a “game” takes backseat to raising money. That’s pretty much it.
January 5, 2016 at 2:18 pm #2162Yep.
In short, this game (within CR’s vision) is impossible.
Cloud computing isn’t cheap. While I deal with Azure costs I can assume Google/Amazon are roughly the same (since I shopped around).
Pricing is well defined. A four core server with SSD will set you back a few hundred a month. You think, no big deal, that’s cheap. Well, extrapolate it a little bit and realize they can only fit 16 players in an instance.
This isn’t even taking into account the network latency of passing every conceivable change that happens to those in the server instance. And all bandwidth costs too…including patches.
January 5, 2016 at 3:48 pm #2164Yup. And they’re running Google Compute instances. The on-going costs alone are going to be killer.
January 5, 2016 at 4:52 pm #2165In case you missed this in that exchange. Since this is patently false – it will come back to haunt her at some point.
“I’m pretty confident I am the most formally educated person in this whole company“
January 5, 2016 at 6:03 pm #2166Do they have great artists?
Of course. The whole thing is a glorified tech demo. Trade offs need to take place.
You know what sucks about computer science and networking? You realize there is a limit to what is possible.
I won’t speak for Derek, but he has basically pointed out major issues in regards to the graphic side of things.
Guess my simple question is…what is the UEC conversion factor within the game.
January 6, 2016 at 4:32 am #2167I spent 3 hours catching up on as much as I could. I read through everything on the Goon forum and then Derek’s twitter, and every word in the Beer email before coming here.
The key point: Chris Roberts is an arrogant egomaniac. He is married to Sandi Gardiner/Roberts, another arrogant egomaniac, as well as a lying bitch. These strong words are incredibly well justified at this point. They are a pair matched in heaven, or hell, and enjoying life thanks to completely idiotic and brain dead folks that just cannot stop giving them money.
In addition to the GLORIOUS email exchange between Beer and Sandi, and Patrick who is confirmed to be the lead forum moderator and customer service manager, we now have further confirmation of the David Jennison letter as being very real, $19 million left, and my favorite, the absolute confirmation of the Aegis Vindicator fighter for $175. For those who do not know, I was among the first post-Beer-not-goons to learn it was an AEGIS ship. I even predicted a good chunk of its design without a picture, based on Derek’s tweets. Since the blog posts kinda broke, I have to use text pasting.
-“MDrake October 8, 2015 – Aegis(?) Vindicator for $175. Hmmm. Well, combat ships sell the most. At that price, it competes with the super hornet. Right within the sweet spot to make the most unit sales and cash. Likely $2.5-3.5 million “funds” raised depending on flash/concept sale duration. CIG is desperately trying to copy the success of the Vanguard heavy fighter sales. If it’s true they are reusing parts from other Aegis ships, well, no shit. Vanguard is Aegis too. Gonna guess vanguard-like cockpit, 2nd seat for a gunner, wings closer in style to a retaliator, ship size in-line with hornets, twin engine medium fighter. A spacey F-14 would sell a lot. Lore-wise it can be a middle of campaign ship; gladius/hornet, to vindicator, to F8 lightings and vanguards. Hey Derek, if you manage to get pictures/descriptions to spoil the surprise, that would be hilarious. Your twitter will have so many foaming-mad folks. Reasonable people will realize you speak the truth.”-
-“MDrake October 10, 2015 – Wow, I am semi-accurate with my guess of the Aegis fighter. Vanguard-like cockpit, retaliator wings, twin engine, size close to super hornet; it really was a spacey F-14. Even the lore for being a 2nd phase fighter came close. Price and name can be changed easily. The sabre was apparently called the “POTATO” when I first saw its sale page. Now the website has fixed it to “sabre”. Wow, I was definitely in CIG’s demographic. WAS.”-
This is among the largest video game scams ever. Crowdfunding for games is not gonna end with a black eye after this. It’ll likely be an ulcer at minimum. At the very least, Star Citizen is near dead. Thank you Derek, for being able to say and remind folks, that the FTC knows about this farce. I know you cannot share much still, but things are going very well now.
January 6, 2016 at 8:38 am #2168Not only is it patently false that she is the most formal educated person in the company but her exchange with the Beer dude highlights also other deep trouble within CIG’s Customer Support. She claims that it’s hard to find and hire good employees for CS, that she has to invest a lot of her own time in training these employees (making her sound also very arrogant and as if those employees are qualified but not really intelligent at the same time), that she never has vacation and is working every day 16 hours and never takes a day off.
If this is true then that means that she has no clue on how to handle/manage employees, can’t delegate tasks apparently, hasn’t been able to set up an efficient workflow and/or all those employees must be leaving CS after a very short time because the company is no good.
She’s trying to put herself in a good light but those claims she makes do not sound good at all to professional people.
If you have to run a One-woman-show for 3+ years something’s very, very wrong!!! -
