@ meat, post #2079 and #2083
$5m = celebrity voice-acting, $5.5m = professional motion capture, $10m = build their own mocap studio
Basically, you proved that Chris has been out of the industry for so long, he doesn’t know the costs involved and scoped creeped the hell out of SC. Well at the beginning, before the $23m mark. Instead of using their home built mocap studio, they went off to The Imaginarium in London, one of the most expensive places possible, for mocap. It becomes even more suspicious when June 27, 2015 comes long, moving to the end of mocap, Derek Smart is a public shaming figure on the PC Gamer website, on July 14, 2015.
There has only been one SQ42 mission demoed. A total of 50 have been promised at $5m. There is only 1 system out of 100, promised in the $6m goal. The project is 1 year overdue, November 2014 vs December 2015.
Chris proceeds to humiliate himself, on a livestream, and it becomes apparent he does not play his game regularly. It makes sense why Chris has been pushing for mouse flight and trackballs for the Saitek joysticks. He does not play games often. He does not know what is fun or practical. He only has a vision, and many terrible ideas to show.
Derek stayed in the games industry. Chris lost ownership of Digital Anvil in order to have Microsoft finish Freelancer, and went to the movie industry with Ortwin. Thanks to Derek’s legal research, backers that have been suspicious of the SC project, learned that Chris Roberts was sued for $8m by Kevin Costner due to breaking a contract. I even made a post on it here. Chris has a history of major failures, including the 1999 Wing Commander film.
Derek Smart has proven to be far more trustworthy in 5 months, compared to Chris Roberts in 3 years since the public announcement.
@ B B
Coincidentally, you and I share many of the same opinions. Did you hear about the Kevin Costner lawsuit? See my post on it here (Derek mentioned it first btw).
The whole Hollywood actor thing would have been… somewhat OK if it was just voice overs. But nope. Full motion capture. So much money dumped into a stretch goal. Yay.
I was just rewatching the stuff in the kickstarter Infinity: Battlescape. So much potential, but since I’ve been burned badly, I am not taking any risks in crowdfunding anymore.
And yes, ranting feels great. Join me in becoming another alt of Derek Smart. The hate reddit is already watching me.
To be fair, many people originally wanted SC to succeed. That included Derek and myself. But… once you see both horrible mismanagement, and outright embezzlement of public money, it’s damn near impossible to be nice. Derek cannot share a bunch of stuff from former CIG staff, but I bet the stuff he learned is terrible. Same reason why the Escapist is not sharing anything. Something big is building. It will be glorious.
What was not glorious, was this whole one procgen planet with Nyx. Maybe if they showed 5-10 planets, each with 1-2 new base layouts, I might’ve been convinced. Of course, it’s a lie. Smoke and mirrors. All before a sale.
To make matters worse, Chris doesn’t even play Star Citizen much. The livestream proved just how out of touch Chris is. He doesn’t know how to troubleshoot a PC, game, or joystick. No wonder he wants trackballs on the Saitek joysticks. Chris is a nutcase, and the rumors of him frying his brain from cocaine may very well be true.
It’s disgusting that folks idolize Chris, even after that kind of screw up. I am starting to develop the opinion that even if Star Citizen fails, every cultist and zealot will blame Derek Smart, and people that got refunds. They will argue with something like “Chris had everything in place. He just needed more time. You people signed up to donate to a project, and all your refunds killed it. Derek Smart and the goons are responsible for the failure of the largest crowdfunded project in history. One that had the foundation to be the BDSSE.” Cultists and zealots will just ignore the whole FTC, embezzlement stuff though… “Chris and everyone else were being paid for their work. They deserved a few perks.”
I feel kind of sick thinking like a white knight…
Once in a while, it is fun to shoot down trolls and trash talkers. Examining how they ignore your points, how broken they are, is fascinating stuff.
I have to wonder if these exceptionally toxic folks are raised properly, frequent drinkers, potheads, divorced, desperate for friends, and have other supposedly mild to serious life problems. I still think anyone that spends $30,000 for a game as a game, is unsound.
Under the Church of Chris, The Gardens of Sandi, The Ortwin Hammer… I look forward to being accused of being Derek Smart, Mr. Small, jealous, a troll, a boot licker, scum… though my favorite remains deserter.
Today’s SC story. The Unmelt tool.
You want to buy an Idris or Javelin? Then melt down your LTI fleet into store credits to prep for the sale. Awwww… you didn’t get your javelin? Want to get your melted LTI ships back? Customer service is backlogged? Concierge too?
Welcome to the new Pledge Buy Back, Unmelt, whatever tool. You can get your previously melted LTI ship back. No store credit or coupons allowed though.
Wait for giant forum rampage on RSI or reddit… One, two, three… And Ben comes in to save the day!
Now look at Ben’s sentence… “We will absolutely change this system, it’s just going to take a little work. We’ve spoken to the web team and there’s not an option for just turning on store credit with the current design… so it’ll take a little thinking and a new build to make right.”
Think about that for a moment. This whole melting down issue has been known for years. It is a problem for white knights and whales. And yet, CIG did not include store credit into the initial release of the tool.
The answer is very obvious. CIG is way beyond desperate for fresh cash, they wanted to release as is, and gauge how the community would react. Too bad, the community isn’t willing to let them cash grab like that. The rest of the info about melting abuse, monthly limits, balance, is just sugar coating, with a tiny legit point for the grey market. Anyone that doesn’t care for LTI and limited ships, has been able to melt their ships and try something else, then melt again and buy back later.
CIG please try again. Esperia Prowler sale? New corvette? Hornet ball turret packages?
Fun time. Lets start with the Escapist article, “Multiple sources from within the company stated that the Pacific Palisades mansion that Chris Roberts shares with Sandi Gardiner is being paid for with funds from the company, along with the couple’s personal vehicles and personal vacations.”
Now look at this picture, specifically the car behind…
As someone from a comedy forum said… “That is a goddamn 911 50th anniversary limited edition!!! You can tell by the rims. That thing starts at 125k USD, if you can even find one. Only like 1900 were made.”
Looks like the disgruntled employees that went to the Escapist were telling the truth. I never doubted the Escapist and how they vetted their sources. Of course, white knights and Chris just can’t let this chatter spread freely.
Chris has said “I’ve been lucky enough to be financially independent, driven nice cars and lived in nice houses. That’s due to money earned through royalties.”
Chris is such a lovable guy. Puts his (formerly secret) wife as Vice President of Marketing, also as Human Resources Manager, so employees with valid complaints have nowhere to go. Hey Chris, nice move. Nice stream too.
@ Paul Howlett
If you used a credit card, ask your bank for instructions on a chargeback. I hear different banks have many different rules for them.
Also, go into your RSI account, open the full details of your $125 purchase, and make a nice clean screenshot of all the details in it. I’ve heard from other people that got refunds, that CIG will delete your account before you are fully refunded, which means a loss of purchase records. You will need everything possible for a chargeback. Maybe even your email from Paypal.
CIG is a dirty company, run by cruel folks. You need to be careful of any customer service tricks they may try. Even for $125.
@ Paul Howlett
I requested my refund way back in October. Since my refund is $2,500, CIG has done the best they could to ignore me after I confirmed my refund request. Luckily, I can afford to totally lose it in the worse case scenario. Though I would prefer not to.
The EU has stronger consumer protection laws than the USA, so the EU is where most of the refunds seem to be going to. Since I am in the USA… yeah. The folks at CIG are incredibly dirty.
Here is Derek’s post about refunds. Enjoy.
