Here is a full clip from GamesCom 2105: The Road to CitizenCon

At 2:51:13 is when Chris Roberts, himself, talks about how much progress has been made and what the backers should expect before CitizenCon. In this particular clip Star Marine is touted as being out by the end August. Important to note that CR never states which August. Might be August 2020, might be August 2016–it sure wasn’t August 2015.

When Enron collapsed, or the Madoff ponzi scheme exposed, or the mortgage industry tanked–who caused that? Was it the journalists that initially reported on the looming troubles? Or was it the fault of those managing the businesses? Would the mortgage industry been just fine if they kept handing out loans to unqualified folks and bundling the loans as long as no one said anything? If star Citizen nevers sees the light of day–blaming some guy’s blog is a bit of a stretch. After all, all Derek has every done is claim stuff like “Star Marine delayed indefinitely”. Then in October, we find out–yeah Star Marine is no longer a deliverable. So Derek did that? Or maybe upper level management at CIG just wanted to make Derek right?

Meat, you are leaving out one key part of Star Citizen’s timeline. The Why and the Who. Why are folks expecting a game? Sure you say that games take a long time to develop. But WHY are people expecting something in 2015 and WHO told them what to expect? We have been hearing from the CEO of the company–Chris Roberts himself that we would have Squadron 42 in 2014, and then told it would be 2015, and the latest date is 2016. These aren’t the fans saying, “The game will be here in 2015”–it is the CEO of the company.

That more than anything is what has put me off the project. The folks in the company continue to give optimistic dates while the backers back them up–with “I don’t expect anything until 2017”. Nobody else seems to think it is a little off that random internet folks understand how long Star Citizen will take to create better than the man leading the project. Which leads me to the conclusion that either Chris Roberts is clueless about game development or he is intentionally giving optimistic dates to encourage people to back the game.

You have touched on the one thing that everyone seems to overlook: “still just wondering when i get to fly my 300i around space looking for trouble to stir up or find cool things to see.”

It has taken from 2012 to maybe sometime soon to get multicrew into the game. The team at CIG has been unable to get Star Marine (the FPS portion) working using a game engine designed for FPS games. Backers have dreamed up some amazing game play scenarios. So here is the nugget to munch on–if it has taken from 2012 to 2016 to get SOME of the basic game elements working–how much longer will it take to create the gameplay elements that would allow gamers to “look for trouble to stir up or find cool things to see”? All of these cool game mechanics–space farming, bounty hunting, ship repair, component manufacturing–all need to be created/coded. Who is going to do the work and how long will it take them? The top tier developers that worked for CIG at one time have left the company. The developers left are flunkies that couldn’t get out of community college. The white knights seem to think shuttering Austin and expanding the Frankfurt office is a great thing. Is it? I’ll leave you with this thought–name any top selling game created in Germany. (Hint: Germany is where game studios go to die.)

On a side note. Peloton, the commercial real estate company managing the Hill Country Galleria in Bee Cave, TX (Austin studio location) is showing suite A-250 as available for lease. (http://www.hillcountrygalleriatexas.com/images/properties/docs/HCG_Bldg_A_4.pdf)

That boggles the mind. The amount of cocaine and hookers this guy could have had for $30K. If you are going to burn through that kind of cash–you might as well have fun along the way. I feel sorry for this guy. His friends should have pointed him towards the adult sections of CraigsList rather than ship porn.

Buying a T-shirt ain’t the worst thing. In a few years, those t-shirts will probably be worth something. Nothing like having a collector’s item from the largest crowdfunded scam in history.

You are being unfair to Chris Roberts!! Your third demand: “Provide a firm date of delivery for this game. Saying that it’s coming in 2016, is completely unacceptable.” has been done. Chris Roberts announced the date and it has never once changed. Because of this it is obvious you have not participated in all of the CitizenCon events. Chris has stated at every single one the release date. Just so you don’t have to review the video feeds, I’ll give you the date. The date is “next year”. Assuming there is a CitizenCon in 2016, we will again hear the release date: “Next Year!”. And just to be clear, if Cloud Imperium makes it to CitizenCon 2020, we will again be told the release date: “Next Year!!”

So please give Chris some slack. I understand folks are busy buying pretty spaceship jpgs, so it is sometimes easy to miss the details.
